She will guide you through some activities involving playful laughter activities, hand clapping rhythms and deep breathing exercises. The gentle movements will reduce tension from your body and the lively social interaction will boost your mood. The group laughter is positively contagious, leaving you feeling uplifted and energised!

NB: This is not a typical yoga class so leave your lycra and yoga mats at home. Bring a water bottle, open heart and sense of humour.

About Laughter Yoga

Laughter Yoga is a group activity led by a trained facilitator to engage the audience in playful laughter exercises and deep breathing techniques from yoga. Initially, the laughter is simulated or acted out with gentle physical movements and hand clapping rhythms. With the addition of smiling and eye contact between group members, the laughter quickly becomes genuine and contagious creating an uplifting energy in the room.

Laughter Yoga was developed in 1995 in Mumbai, India by Dr Madan Kataria, a medical doctor and his wife Madhuri, a yoga teacher. Dr Kataria recognised that people were more stressed and less playful and researched many scientific studies that described the health benefits of laughter.

Meet speakers and special guests

Janet Whitfield

Based in Perth, Western Australia, I am dedicated to leading a healthy lifestyle for myself and my family and I am passionate about enhancing the wellbeing of others. I value good nutrition, regular exercise, daily yoga/meditation practice, quality sleep, positive social connections and of course – laughter!

I have a Bachelor of Social Science (Leisure Sciences) from Edith Cowan University and over 25 years’ experience in the health, sport and recreation industries. My professional roles have included event management, leisure program coordination and health education workshop facilitation.

How I discovered Laughter Yoga

In November 2019, seeking to add new skills to my professional tool kit, I became an internationally certified Laughter Yoga Leader.

Janni Goss was one of my trainers. She generously offered to mentor my laughter career and in 2021 invited me to join the Laugh WA Inc. committee as Vice President. Since November 2022 I have held the position of President and I am dedicated to growing the laughter yoga community in WA.

My enthusiasm for empowering others to nurture their wellbeing with Laughter Yoga, along with the desire to create a better work/family life balance, motivated me to start my own business in 2022. Abundant Laughter provides me with the opportunity to share the benefits of laughter with corporate groups as a social team building activity and community groups as a tool for personal wellbeing. I feel compelled to support others to ease their stress and suffering by engaging them in Laughter Yoga as a pathway to leading their lives with an abundance of fun, good health and happiness.
